I am Mrs Louise Ankers, Headteacher of the Hafod Federation which consists of Gwerynymyndd CP School and Ysgol y Waun. I qualified as a teacher in 1998 and started my career in a very large primary school in Manchester. After 5 years teaching Year 2 and then Year 4, I was appointed as Foundation Phase Leader in Penarlag Primary School. This was a very exciting time in Wales for Primary Education with the introduction of the Foundation Phase Curriculum. After successfully setting up an Early Years Unit and completing various leadership qualifications I was appointed as Headteacher of Ysgol y Waun in 2008. Teaching for 50% of the week and being headteacher was a challenge however, I loved being in the classroom, seeing Nursery and Reception progress daily and I got to know all the children and families so well. As Ysgol y Waun grew my teaching commitment reduced and in 2017 we were approached by Flintshire County Council to federate our school with Gwernymynydd CP. This was another new challenge and one I embraced. Three years on and I can see how far we have travelled. There are so many benefits of becoming a federation and school improvement is at the centre of everything. I am very fortunate to have strong staff in both schools. When I am not working I love to sit and relax with my husband and our dog, Cherry. Holidays, families and Chester Races are things I look forward to.
